Hi Everyone! I’m Linda…the Director and primary teacher here at Gulf Coast Yoga. We are VERY excited to be able bring Bikram Hot Yoga to beautiful Venice, Florida. YAY!! We came down here from the New England area about a year and half ago and have been looking for the perfect location for a studio. Well, we found it- very close to the intersection of Tamiami Trail and East Venice Ave.
For those of you new to the yoga world don’t worry. I like to tell new students 3 things:
1) It’s a 90 minute class… 2) It’s HOT…3) Take break if you need to…
The Bikram series is perfect for beginners. There’s no chanting going on here, no gongs or weird incense. Just straight up 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises done in heated room. The postures cover the full range of motion of the human body, YOUR body. They are done in the same order in every class. The first class or 2 is really diagnostic- you see and feel where you need to work. Maybe flexibility is an issue? Or balance? Range of motion compromised? Do you need to build strength? Maybe a combination of things…once you begin the practice you are using the same diagnostic postures as the tools to create a more healthy balanced body.
The instructions are verbal, that means the teacher tells you what to do, step by step. You only need to do as much as your body is able to do that day. For some of us just trying to balance standing on one foot can be quite an experience! The first couple of classes can seem a bit overwhelming, that’s normal, sit down if you need to, take a breather and then join in again when you’re ready. The only requirement is that you TRY the right way. Oh, yeah, and try to have a little fun while figuring it all out!!
OK, so I am new to this whole blogging thing…but I am going to try to keep you updated as far as progress and estimated opening date go maybe even post a few pictures as we go along. Last week we had our first steps with the construction….we’ll see how THAT goes! For now we are hoping to open in September….
I look forward to meeting you and hearing from you…. Please email me or leave a comment if you have any questions.
